Catch a houseplant pest in the first week or two and you can clear it with soap and a shower head. Let it breed unnoticed for a month and you are in for six weeks of repeat treatments. What separates those two outcomes is whether anyone was looking.
Pests come with growing plants indoors. They ride in on new purchases and drift through open windows, and every grower deals with them from time to time. Below is how to find them early and how to clear them, rather than treating once and hoping.
The habit that prevents most infestations
Once a week, while you check whether anything needs water, turn over a few leaves. Ten seconds per plant.
Look at:
- The undersides of leaves. Nearly every sap-feeding pest lives there, out of the light and out of sight.
- Leaf joints and nodes, where the stalk meets the stem. Mealybugs and scale favour those tight, sheltered angles.
- New growth. Soft, unfurling tissue punctures easily, so aphids and thrips gather there.
- The soil surface for fungus gnats, and the pot rim, where mealybugs collect.
Light makes the difference. Several of these pests measure about a millimetre, and a phone torch held at an angle across the leaf surface picks out both the insects and the fine webbing.
Quarantine new plants
Most infestations walk in the front door on a new plant. Keep anything new away from your collection for two to three weeks and check it over during that time, which is long enough for eggs present at purchase to hatch and show themselves. The habit is mildly annoying and it prevents most outbreaks. Apply it to gifts and cuttings from friends as well as shop purchases.
The pests, and how to tell them apart
Spider mites
What you see: fine pale stippling on the upper leaf surface, as though someone dusted it with pinpricks of lighter colour. The leaf turns dull and bronzed. Fine webbing strung between leaf joints and along stems shows up in an advanced infestation, which is when most people notice and by which point the population is large.
Where: leaf undersides. They look like barely visible specks, red, brown or pale. Tap a leaf over a sheet of white paper and watch for moving dots.
Conditions they love: warm, dry air and dusty foliage. They multiply fast in heated rooms in winter.
Treatment: take the plant to the sink or shower and rinse it, undersides included. Physical removal knocks the population down before you spray anything. Follow with insecticidal soap or neem oil, coating the undersides. Repeat every five to seven days for at least three cycles, because contact sprays miss the eggs and those hatch after treatment. Raise the humidity and wipe the leaves, since mites struggle in humid, clean conditions.
Fungus gnats
What you see: small dark flies drifting around pots and toward your face. The adults do no damage. The larvae live in the top few centimetres of soil and feed on decaying organic matter, though in numbers they chew fine roots, seedlings and cuttings above all.
What they tell you: the soil surface never dries out. Treat them as a watering diagnostic as much as a pest.
Treatment: let the top 3 to 5 cm dry between waterings, which collapses most populations within a fortnight. Yellow sticky traps catch the adults and show you whether numbers are falling. For a stubborn population, water with a BTI product (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, sold as mosquito bits), which targets the larvae and leaves the plant alone. A 1 cm top dressing of coarse sand or fine grit stops the adults reaching the soil to lay. Watering from below keeps the surface dry too.
Mealybugs
What you see: small white cottony tufts, like specks of lint, tucked into leaf joints, along stems and sometimes on the roots. They move slowly enough that people mistake them for mould or residue. Sticky honeydew usually sits nearby, sometimes with black sooty mould growing on it.
Treatment: touch each one with a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol, which dissolves the waxy coating and kills on contact. For a widespread infestation, spray the whole plant with insecticidal soap or diluted alcohol and repeat weekly. Mealybugs hide inside leaf sheaths and down in the soil around the roots, so keep treating for several weeks after you think you have won. Check the root ball on a plant that keeps getting reinfested.
Scale
What you see: small brown, tan or black bumps stuck to stems and leaf midribs, looking more like part of the plant than an insect. They sit still, because adults settle permanently under a protective shell. Sticky honeydew on the leaves below, or on the floor under the plant, is often the first thing you notice.
Treatment: the shell blocks most sprays, so scrape or rub them off with a fingernail, an old toothbrush or an alcohol-dipped cloth. Then treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, which smother rather than poison, and repeat every week or two. The mobile juvenile stage, called crawlers, has no shell yet and dies to contact sprays, so repeat treatment breaks the cycle. Prune out a badly infested branch instead of nursing it.
Aphids
What you see: clusters of small soft-bodied insects, green but also black, pink or white, packed onto new growth, flower buds and soft stems. You can see them without a lens. Look for sticky honeydew, distorted new leaves and discarded white skins.
Treatment: among the easiest to clear. A firm spray of water at the sink dislodges most of them, and insecticidal soap handles the rest. They breed fast, so check every few days for a fortnight and repeat. Aphids tend to arrive on plants that have spent the summer outdoors.
Thrips
What you see: the pest that goes unidentified for months. Silvery or bronzed patches where the tissue has been rasped and drained, tiny black specks of excrement, and distorted, scarred new growth that never opens properly. The insects are slender, one to two millimetres, and dart away when disturbed.
Why they are hard: thrips pupate in the soil, so treating the foliage alone leaves a reservoir that re-emerges a week later. They also move between plants.
Treatment: commit to the full cycle. Isolate the plant, prune off the worst growth, and spray insecticidal soap or neem over the foliage and the soil surface, since the pupae sit there. Blue sticky traps catch adults and tell you whether the population is dropping. Repeat every five to seven days for four to six weeks. Thrips come back more than any other pest here when you stop early.
Whitefly
What you see: tiny white moth-like insects that rise in a cloud when you disturb the plant, then resettle under the leaves. Nymphs look like flat, pale scales on leaf undersides. Honeydew and yellowing follow.
Treatment: yellow sticky traps work well here, since the adults fly straight to yellow. Combine with insecticidal soap on leaf undersides, weekly. Vacuuming the adults off the plant helps more than it sounds like it should.
Why one treatment is never enough
This explains most failed pest treatments.
Contact treatments such as insecticidal soap, neem and alcohol kill the insects they touch. They miss eggs, and they cannot reach pests hidden in soil, leaf sheaths or the crevices of a growing point. Most of these pests go from egg to breeding adult in one to three weeks, depending on temperature.
So one thorough treatment kills the visible population, the plant looks clean for a week, the eggs hatch, and the infestation returns. The treatment worked. It needed repeating on a schedule that outlasts the life cycle.
The rule: treat every five to seven days, and keep going for two to three weeks past the last live pest you see. Extend that for thrips and spider mites.
The treatment toolkit
- Water. A thorough rinse in the shower removes a large share of any soft-bodied population and costs nothing.
- Insecticidal soap. Disrupts the insect's outer membrane on contact, so coverage decides whether it works. Undersides above all.
- Neem oil. Smothers, and also disrupts feeding and growth. Slower than soap, and it interrupts the breeding cycle. Keep it off plants sitting in direct sun, where the oil scorches foliage.
- Isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud. For spot-treating mealybugs and scale.
- Sticky traps. Control and monitoring at once. Falling catch numbers are your best evidence a cycle is working.
- Pruning. Cutting off a heavily infested stem removes hundreds of insects at a stroke.
- Isolation. Move an affected plant away from the others the moment you find something, before you treat.
Test any spray on one or two leaves and wait 24 hours before you treat a whole plant, above all with neem and on thin-leaved species like calatheas and ferns.
What not to do
- Do not treat before you identify. Alcohol clears mealybugs and does nothing for fungus gnat larvae in the soil.
- Do not rely on misting to deter spider mites. It raises humidity for a few minutes. Steady ambient humidity and clean leaves discourage them.
- Do not treat once and declare victory. See above.
- Do not reach for a systemic insecticide first. Most indoor infestations clear without one, and it is worth keeping in reserve.
- Do not ignore the neighbours. Spider mites and thrips spread by contact and air movement, so inspect everything within touching distance.
Telling damage apart when the pest has gone
Pest damage outlives the pest. Stippling, silvering and scarred growth stay on the leaf long after a treatment succeeded, which makes it hard to know whether you are looking at an active problem or a historical one. Watch new growth instead. Leaves that emerge clean and undistorted mean you have won, whatever the older foliage looks like.
Early spider mite stippling also resembles a nutrient deficiency, and thrips scarring resembles physical damage, under ordinary indoor lighting. Prevention
Healthy plants shrug off pests that overwhelm stressed ones. Adequate light, sensible watering, feeding through the growing season and clean leaves do more preventive work than any spray. Wipe dust off the foliage now and then, since dust favours spider mites and hides the early signs. Quarantine new arrivals, and turn a few leaves over every week.
